A recent destination for American travelers, Cuba has become a travel hotspot, and with that comes unprecedented luxury in a nation that is rapidly growing and changing. Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski La Habana is a standout in the movement towards upscale hospitality in Cuba. The nation’s first five-star hotel, the Kempinski has world-class style and accommodations.  Situated in UNESCO-protected Old Havana, Kempinski is ideally located for Americans looking to test new waters.

Not a stranger to firsts, the hotel was initially built as the Manzana de Gómez building in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The building was Cuba’s first European shopping arcade. Later used as a theater, office building and school, the Manzana de Gómez building was deserted since the 1950s. Fast forward to today, the original structure has been converted to a 246-room hotel, boasting three bars, three restaurants, a 10,000 square-foot spa, a rooftop pool and a gym overlooking the city.

Expectedly, the hotel’s various “hang-out” spaces pay tribute to Cuba’s culture and history. The plush Evocación Tobacco Lounge, serves the nation’s famous cigars which a sommelier pairs with the perfect local rum. The vibrantly decorated, Bar Constance overlooks the famous Bar Floridita. In the spirit of whimsy, the former is named for a bartender from the latter, who is credited with inventing the Hemingway. Kempinski’s sixth-floor restaurant offers views of Havana’s most famous cites, such as Parque Central, while serving traditional Cuban fare.

The hotel’s rooms are bright and airy. Tall ceilings, tropical accent colors against a grey palette and grand double doors that open onto romantic balconies give the space real vacation vibes. The hotel’s shared spaces bare art from local Cuban artists, continuing the Kempinski’s dedication to preserving Cuban culture while doling out luxury.

While service is not totally perfected in this new haunt, the Kempinski’s concierge service is working with a travel agency to provide chauffeured tours in Havana’s well-known “Yank tanks”, a delightfully vintage and authentic touch.
