If you’ve been wanting to book a trip to Shanghai, you now have an excellent excuse: Capella Shanghai, Jian Ye Li, the bustling city’s newest hotel, gives luxury a new meaning. Combining old-world and modern majesty, the hotel – the newest member of the Leading Hotels of the World luxury group – is a refreshing and unique contrast to the skyscrapers and tall buildings of China’s biggest city.

The compound features 55 villas and 40 residences and is sprawled across 22 gorgeous stone gate lanes, which connect more than 200 townhouses dating back to the 1930s. Each building has been restored by Jaya International Design, while still carefully maintaining the vintage charm and elegance of a decade long ago. Eastern and Western architecture blend together in each villa, which range from one to three bedrooms between 1,200 and 2,700 square feet.

As for the hotel’s amenities? The bathrooms carry Aqua di Parma bath products, and each stay provides you with your own personal Capella assistant. The property’s spa, Auriga, features luxurious treatments for mind, body and soul that coincide with the cycles of the moon. And after a day of nearby shopping and exploring the local art galleries of Tianzifang, it’ll be time to dine at the hotel’s le Comptoir de Pierre Gagnaire restaurant, from the multi-Michelin-starred French chef.
